Japanese Names By Frequency List

Japanese names are unreasonably difficult. The kanji often doesn't use the reading you learned. On top of that, many names that use the same kanji are read in many different ways. It's a mess, to say the least. The best thing you can do is learn Japanese names in an order that will get you the most benefit. What is that order? Well, frequency, of course. We've come up with a list of the most frequent last names and first names (boys and girls) so that you can learn the names that you'll need to know first making your studies much more efficient.

The Japanese Names Frequency List includes:

  • 1,000 boy first names
  • 1,000 girl first names
  • 200 family (last) names

They are put in order of frequency (the order you should learn them in), and last names include the most common reading as well as any other readings a name might have (you'd be surprised). We recommend you learn the most common reading though, as the other readings tend to be more uncommon.

We've also broken up the kanji in each name as well. That means you can sort by kanji and look for patterns in (name) kanji reading. For example, find all the names that have the kanji 糖 in it so you can see if they're all the same. These patterns will be really helpful in the madness that is Japanese name reading.

Upon purchase, you will receive a download link. It will be a zipped file (use an application to unzip it) which includes three PDFs (one for each of the lists) as well as an Excel file (with all three lists included in one file).

And, while you're at it, be sure to check out our other downloadables.
